IFJ Calls for Reinstatement of Journalists Dismissed by Korean Broadcasters
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for the prompt reinstatement of all the journalists who have been dismissed by the Korean broadcasters YTN and Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) in recent years.According to IFJ affiliate, the Journalist Association of Korea (JAK), YTN dismissed a number of journalists six years ago, while MBC released journalists on its staff two years ago. JAK says that in both cases the journalists were dismissed as a result of their struggle to maintain fairness in news reporting and to safeguard the freedom of the press. The IFJ has called on Mr Bae Seok-gyu, who now heads YTN, and Mr Kim Jong-guk, who heads MBC, who were both journalists before their rise to power, to reinstate the dismissed journalists to their news reporting and production positions without further delay. However, the IFJ believes it would be unwise for the dismissed journalists to seek a solution to their situation through the court of law, and says It is crucial that they find other ways to overcome the pain and shock of dismissal, rather than seeking legal compulsion. The IFJ has given its full backing to the JAK and will continue to support the dismissed journalists until they are reinstated to their former position at the media organisations.
